VMware PowerCLI – Adding RDM Disk’s

After creating the required LUN’s on your storage array and mapped the LUN’s to your ESXi hosts then you may use PowerCLI to add these new LUNs as RDM Disk’s to a Virtual Machine.

The first four steps outline how to use PowerCLI to add an individual RDM to a Virtual Machine and the second section provides the script to add multiple RDM volumes to a Virtual Machine(s).

1. Connect to vCenter:
Connect-VIServer -Server “vCenter_IP” -User UserName -Password Password

If you need to retreive the Cluster and Host names:
look up the Cluster Name:
look up the Host names in the cluster:
Get-Cluster ‘Cluster Name’ | Get-VMHost | Select Name

2. Retrieve the ConsoleDeviceName(s):

vSphere 5.x Storage vMotion does not rename virtual machine files on completing migration

My colleague is have sad me, when somebody will rename inventory name of VM, than do storage vMotion, and below options was enabled on ESXi, storage vMotion are going to rename folder name of VM to same name of inventory. You can set up this option, if you are follow this steps:


Moving a managed ESXi/ESX host from one vCenter Server to another vCenter Server

In our environment, we have 3 datacenters. The legacy consist of IBM blade servers with virtual vCenter, and the new consist of Cisco UCS blade servers, with other vCenter. This is virtual same. We guessed that insert IBM servers into vCenter of Cisco servers. I found a vmware KB articel. This is very easy procedure, if they aren’t use vDS.


vCenter 6.0 Install Linked Mode

I have 2 site in my lab environment. For eximple HQ site and DR-SITE, and each site have one-one vCenter server. Management will be easy when use this two vCenter servers in linked mode options. You can see two vCenter servers in same management application, WebClient or vSphere Client (thick). Platform Services Controll are going to replicate between two vCenter. I will show  you how able to create linked mode vCenter environment.

Requiments: You need VC1.LAB.LOC, this is a simple embedded deployment vCenter 6.0, nothing special, typical next next finish install.

1 – Insert VMware vSphere 6.0 media into the CD-ROM, or mount ISO, then choose vCenter Install


2 – Accept license Agreement


3 – On Select deployment type page, you can choose Embedded deployment


4 – Type System Network Name (FQDN – Full name)


5 – vCenter Single Sign-On you can choose “Join a vCenter Single Sign-On” option



6 – Create a New Site like DR-SITE


7 – Configure vCenter Service Account (You can use AD domain service Account. In this example i select local system admin account)


8 – Select database, like embedded vPostgress or full MS SQL 2008 r2 on external or internal server


9 – Check ports


10 – Select destination folders


11 – Check the summary


12 – Install process

vCenter Server Example Upgrade Paths

How can upgrade vSphere 5.5 to 6.0.0?


I upgraded my lab environment the last day, and i share for you any screenshots.

I used my vCenter Servers in Linked Mode options. I couldn’t found how to this scanerio. Maybe somebade else?

My expereince was not bad, my first vCenter Server keep alive after upgrade process 🙂

Now i continou test, and i will report from there!
