Change vROps “Datastore is running out of disk space” precent centric alert

Datastores is an importent objects in every VMware environtment. Especially free space of Datastore. So I think we need collect information about free space and we want to get alert message when the free space is low or it is getting low on DS.

Fortunetly VMware vROps has a built-in alert message about this topic. Name of this alert is “Datastore is running out of disk space” wich alert send to Us e-mail when “Datastore space usage reaching “ALERT LEVEL” limit” (85/90/95%) and “Datastore space time remaining is low” symptom definitions meet the values.

Default Alert settings of Datastore is running out of disk space

As you remember in vROps Alerts is working different way as other monitoring tools (as I know, like Nagios).

vROps collect metrics from environment, in this case from Datastore through vCenter Server. We can create Symptome Definitions (Alert / Alert Settings / Symptom Definitions/Add (green cross)) from Metrics or Properties.

VMware vROps Symptoms

Alerts consists of symptoms. If symptoms reaching the level wich was seted up and match all conditions (Any / All logical separation) we have got Alert from vROps.

More informations about vROps Alerts:

Jump back to subject of this blog article. My problem was with default DS alert that we should have leave huge free spaces on big datastores becouse of this symptoms is watching free space in precent. Eg. I got alert from 8TB datastore despite of I had 700GB free space on this DS.

I created new symptom definitions:

Base Object Type: vCenter Adapter / Datastore
Metrics: Capacity / Available Space (GB)
Threshold: Static

Name Level Condition Value
Datastore Available Space reaching Warning limit Warning is less than or equel to 150
Datastore Available Space reaching Immediate limit Immediate is less than or equel to 100
Datastore Available Space reaching Critical limit Critical is less than or equel to 50

VMware vROps Symptoms

After I added this tree symptoms to “Datastore is running out of disk space” alert as new Self-Datastore objects by “Any” condition.

This alert mean: The DataStore free space is lower than 85% or 90% or 95% and 150GB or 100GB ot 50GB and Disk space time remaining <= 60 days we are going to get an Alert message from vROps.

If you have any qestion pls. leave a comment!

VMworld Europe 2017 – First day experiences #vmworld

I would like to share my opinion and experiences about my first VMworld EU (Barcelona) happening 🙂

11/09/17 – We pick up our badge and look oround a little. We met Valentin Czuczumanov (Senior Engineer at VMware) and Nyitrai Csaba (VMUG Hungary leader)

12/09/17 – Becouse of morning rush hour in Barcelona we arrived at Keynote a little bit late. The CEO of VMware Pat Gelsinger @PGelsinger has already started the speach. Fortunetly I got a quite good place in the “arena”

In the vmvillage had big screen where can you see the live streem from next room 🙂

Pat Gelsinger show us how we are able to migrate our VMs from on-prem to cloud in Virtual Reality. It was a funny demo with Alan Renouf @alanrenouf.

VMworld 2017 Pat Gelsinger
Pat Gelsinger at VMworld General Session

End of the general session I had to run Hall 8.0 Room 21, becouse I scheduled lots of breakout session. Fira Gran Via is a big place but VMworld also is a big event.

I catched up my session “Implementing Advanced vSphere Features with Veeam Availability Suite” (#PBO3309BES) in the time. Here is my tweet and a picture from session.

The presenters Michael Cade from UK and Clinton Wyckoff show us what is new in Veeam v10, and end of the session they demonstrate benefit of itegration Veeam and vRealize Log Insight. They also talked about how we can backup encrytped VMs and why vVOL is better then VMFS perspective of snapshot base backups.

Fortunetly I can spoke Saurabh Chandrate, Solution Architect at Blue Medora, about our new Blue Medora pack introduction. If somebady don’t know Blue Medora pls. visit they website. They have solution packs to VMware vRealize Operation Manager, and we have extended our vROps environment with this capabilities.

My next session was VMware Cloud on AWS: Storage deep dive  with Ben Meadowcroft

We close this day at Barcelona vs. Juventus match (3:0)

Some other great guys was there also 😀

VMware Mirage – Only Download Layer

I have worked a VMware Mirage introduction as i mentioned earlier. Our project team specified very short time window for restart. It is only 30 minutes. The PCs are hosts to a cash register sofware witch is start a special way. In registry of Windows the shell was changed from explorer.exe to software’s exe.

Mirage will manage this settings that way it will restart PC without any question. NAG scrren will not ask the user about restart. Becouse of PCs connect by 3G network to Mirage, the assign process time of new bas layer is unpredictable. Other side we got a short restart time.

I figured out that we upload the changes between two base layer, and we will apply the changes a later time.

Assign Base Layer to VCD / Select “Only Download Layer”

Follow the wizard’s steps. The changes will upload to the selected CVDs, and thats all. After this process, PC will not restart automatically. We can save about 30-45 minutes.

In the Tasks menu we can see the state of process “Base Layer Download” is done. Mirage server uploaded the changes to CVD.

We can apply this changes (I call that Install process) if we select task and from right click menu choose “Apply Layers” option.

VMware Mirage will “install” the changes about 10-15 minutes, than the PC will restart automatically. It is not depens on 3G bandwith, becouse layer update process is going on PC without network usage.

vRealize Operation Manager upgrade from 6.5 to 6.6 – License issue

I think you heard about new vRealize Operation Manager release. If not check this Release Notes

It was subject of many blogs:

I admit, the new UI is brilliant, my colleagues are sharing this opinion. So U can read about new features and integration with VMware Log Insigt and Business Management.

The upgrade process same as from 6.4 to 6.5. I found a good blog which is present it step by step:

After upgrade process was done we realize in vRealize 🙂 something strange. When we selected a VM we seen a watermarked message in the background, as you can see in the picture below. “License is invalid”

License is invalid watermark

The solution is simple, you can go Administration / Management / Licensing page and select License Groups tab in vROPS.

Check the Licensable Usage column and if you see 0 value in Product Licensing row it will be the problem.

Check Licensable Usage

In this case select Product Licensing row and click pencil icon on top. Under vRealize Operation Manager select your license key or keys depends on your environment and click next.

Select your license key or keys

Define a membership criteria as you wish or use legacy settings. They didn’t change in our environment. If you could advice about filering I would give you, pls. contact me. Click next.

Check Preview then click Finish button.

!! Don’t forget push the refresh button on License Keys page however you can’t see the changes on License Groups page 🙂

Push the Refresh button!!!

When you did everything right on License Groups page you will see a bigger value then 0 in Licensable usege column.

I hope this short article will help for you, when you experience similar problem after your upgrade.

VMware Mirage for Retail presentation (VMUG Hungary Q2)

Tuday was (27/06/17) VMUG Hungary meeting at IMAX Cinema City (Arena mall).

You can find the Agende on this link: ( I know it is long 🙂 )

First presenter was Filip Verloy and he talked about Rubrik. It is a new approach in backups. Two weeks ago i was part of an other presentation about Rubrik backup appliance by Rutger Kosters. He showed us lots of interesting things, and some new feature from latest version of Rubrik. I think it is good idea and we schould follow the new enhancements.

After it came presentation of NetApp about HCI solutions. In one appliance the Customers can choose between storage node and compute noode. Details here. Essence: the compute and storage can scale differently.

Coffe break!

Valentin explaned the new releases from VMware product especially vRealize Operation Manager 6.6, and showed the startegic ways. He talked about VMware support levels, what is the main different among support subscriptions.

I was the next at before lunch. I talked about VMware Mirage introduction at my company.

You can see my presentation in below.

Unfortunately I had to go, so I didn’t see the other’s presentation. I hope András Herceg (vThing) will mention them in his blog.

28/60/17 – Update1: (Yes, He did it! :))

VMware Horizon Mirage 5.9 update and WebConsole install

As I mentioned in my previously article, we have introduced VMware Horizon Mirage. I would like to share our upgrade process, particularly one moment.

The upgrade process is very simple. You can follow this document:

First of all you can upgrade your Mirage management server or servers then upgrade your Mirage servers. When you want to connect to Mirage Console after upgrade (only mirage management server updated) it wont be work, becouse you have to upgrade mirage servers to. In the console, under System Configuration / Servers tree you will see configuration mismatch error message.

Check the points in secund step in VMware documentation, and the upgrade process is done! 🙂

Let’s go install a new web interface to our new Mirage server. It was part of our plan, but before we had been installed the web console we upgraded our servers to new versions.

We decided to install Web Management solution on Mirage Management servers. I didn’t find any recommendation why can’t do this.

Install IIS server

Install Web Management server

When we tried to install msi file, we got an error message: “VMware mirage web applications setup wizard ended prematurely”

Fortunately we found a VMware Community discouss about this problem, and it solved the problem.

The solution:

  • Log into the server (our case Mirage Management server) by Mirage Service Account
  • Run a Command promt by Administrator
  • msiexec.exe /i “c:\tmp\mirage.WebManagement.x64.161934.msi” /L* “C:\TMP\mirageinstall.log”

The Web Management installed fine! 🙂

Desktop full restore by VMware Horizon Mirage

I’m part of a project where we can solve approximately 200 dekstop (PC base POS) security updates. This PCs are connecting to our company HQ by VPN over 3G connection. This is a limited size usage solution, so we have only x GB traffic in one month for whole environment. If we overuse this we will pay for our provider.

It was the main reason why we have started install the VMware Mirage system to try it.

Mirage can:

  • Split Base layer from App layer
  • Compress network traffic
  • In case of network problem
  • In case of network problem, continuous U/D traffic from position of problem
  • Easy restore to earlier snaphot / state

We tried the latest case in our POC system. The original conception was that: we remove a Windows security update manually from PC, and Mirage should have restored it to previously status.

We uninstalled the update, restarted the PC, and we couldn’t believe our eyes. Windows crashed!

Hungarian Windows 🙂

Ok, don’t panic, it should have been a real situation. Let’s look what we can do in this situation?!

We find this article on VMware Documentation Site:

Follow steps in the article that you can create a bootable USB pendrive wich consist of VMware Mirage Agent.

It was our command under test:

C:\BootUSB>win7usb.cmd F:\ C:\BootUSB\MirageClient\MirageClient.x64.138892.msi false 1 C:\BootUSB\Drivers

(You will find this “win7usb.cmd” in Mirage install zip file)

When you have connection between PC and Mirage server, the server will recognize the PC.

Right click and select restore option, and follow the wizard.

On the PC’s sceen you will see similar this.

That’s it, your PC/POS was restored, and it was only 45 min in our test environment! 🙂

Update 17/07/17: Vladan wrote details about how you can create a bootable usb stick:
